Know before you go: INDOT pulls back road closures, assists with Indiana 500 traffic

Plan Extra Travel Time,
Know Before You Go
for Holiday Weekend Traffic

Memorial Day traditionally marks the start of the summer travel season in Indiana. And whether you’re attending the Indianapolis 500, vacationing, visiting family and friends, or just passing through, INDOT urges drivers to plan extra travel time, to stay informed on road conditions, and to drive safely.

Road Work Suspended

Most highway maintenance activities and construction projects will halt work during the holiday weekend to increase mobility and safety. INDOT directs its contractors to pull back barriers and barricades to the safest extent possible to accommodate the anticipated increase in holiday travel. Some restrictions and reduced speed limits will remain in place due to ongoing road construction, including:

Northern Indiana

  • U.S. 41 is closed in both directions between Sibley St. and Michigan St. in Hammond for bridge reconstruction.
  • U.S. 41 is reduced to one lane in each direction between S.R. 114 and U.S. 24 near Kentland in Newton County for bridge and pavement construction.
  • U.S. 31 is reduced to one lane in each direction near Plymouth in Marshall County for paving work.
  • U.S. 24 is down to one lane in each direction between S.R. 29 and U.S. 31 in Cass County for pavement restoration.
  • I-469 is reduced to one lane in each direction at multiple locations in Allen County.
  • S.R. 14 is closed in both directions between U.S. 41 and S.R. 55 in Newton County.
  • S.R. 8 is closed in both directions in LaPorte County between U.S. 421 and S.R. 39.
  • U.S. 421 is closed in both directions between S.R. 143 and S.R. 14 in Pulaski County for bridge construction.
  • U.S. 6 is closed in both directions at Brimfield in Noble County.

Central Indiana

  • Watch for brief lane closures on I-74 at multiple locations between Indianapolis and the Illinois state line for bridge construction.
  • Portions of State Road 3 are reduced to one lane in each direction between New Castle and Muncie.

Southern Indiana

  • S.R. 37 is reduced to one lane in each direction in between Martinsville and Bloomington for I-69, Section 5 construction.

Indy 500 Traffic

Race fans driving to Indianapolis 500 festivities this weekend should plan their routes to the track and designate a sober driver home. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway provides directions, transportation options and general race information at www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/events/indy500/fan-info/directions-and-zones/.

INDOT traffic management staff will be on duty during the race, monitoring traffic cameras and congestion, coordinating with law enforcement, and posting information to dynamic message signs. INDOT’s Hoosier Helpers freeway service patrol sponsored by State Farm will assist all weekend in keeping traffic flowing.

On Sunday, May 27, INDOT encourages through travelers to avoid race traffic on I-465 and I-65 on the west side of Indianapolis.

Drive safely

The Indiana State Police and local law-enforcement agencies are participating in the national Click It or Ticket mobilization through June 3, 2018. Officers will join thousands of law-enforcement agencies across the country in conducting high-visibility patrols encouraging drivers and passengers to buckle up.

Last year, more than 240 law-enforcement agencies performed 8,728 hours of traffic patrols and issued more than 30,000 citations and warnings, including 13,700 seat-belt and child-restraint citations.

Overtime police patrols are paid with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration funds administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI).
