Greene County Emergency Management places warming centers on standby ahead of winter weather and extreme cold
/Greene County Emergency Management is monitoring an approaching winter weather system that is expected to bring snow and dangerously cold temperatures to the area, including sub-zero wind chills.
In preparation, warming centers across Greene County have been placed on standby and are ready to be activated as needed. These centers are intended to provide a safe, warm environment for individuals and families who may be affected by the extreme cold.
Residents in need of a warming center are encouraged to contact Greene County Dispatch at 812-384-4411, Option 1. Dispatch will notify the appropriate personnel to activate and open a warming center in their area.
Greene County Emergency Management urges all residents to take precautions during this period of severe winter weather. Please limit travel, when possible, dress in warm layers, ensure pets are sheltered, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Use extra caution when traveling, as snow and icy conditions may make roads hazardous.
Greene County Commissioners have issued a Travel Advisory for the entire county effective 12:00 pm Saturday January 24, 2026, to 12:00 pm Monday January 27, 2026.
This is the lowest level of local travel advisories which means that routine travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation, and individuals should use caution and avoid those areas.
