Elnora man accused of criminal mischief

An Elnora man is accused of throwing chicken on the kitchen floor and throwing chairs at a surveillance camera at the home of a family member in Greene County last Monday.

A summons has been issued to Billy Joe Pickett, 51, Elnora, ordering him to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing on October 8. Pickett is facing a preliminary charge of criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor.

Deputy James Carpenter of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to a residence in Newberry around 10:26 a.m. last Monday, September 7. A neighbor who was working in her yard that morning heard Pickett yelling at a woman and she called the sheriff’s department.

When Deputy Carpenter arrived, Pickett was gone. The deputy talked to the resident who said Pickett, who was her son, had come to her house wanting money and food. A verbal argument began and she said Pickett threatened to hit her then threw food on the floor. She said outside on a deck, Pickett picked up a chair and threw it at a surveillance camera. The chair failed to damage the camera so Pickett allegedly picked up another chair and threw it at the camera causing it to point downward. Pickett allegedly then kicked two holes in lattice as he was leaving.

Deputy Carpenter also talked to the neighbor and he viewed video from the camera. He reported the video showed Pickett walking out of the house, throwing the chairs then walking out of camera view.

Deputy Carpenter took photographs of the damaged lattice and of chicken on the kitchen floor.
