When GCSD arrived on the scene of a crash, the driver was spinning his wheels trying to get out of a ditch. He was unsuccessful. Breath test results showed he had a BAC of .175.

Colt Michael McDaniel, 26, Bloomfield, was arrested by Deputy Zachary Goad of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department early Saturday, August 21.

Around 5 a.m. that Saturday, Greene County Dispatch got a call about a crash involving injuries on State Road 45 south of I-69. The caller said a vehicle was in a ditch and the driver was “passed out.” Emergency personnel from the fire department were first to arrive on scene and reported the driver was awake but refusing to get out of the vehicle.

Deputy Zachary Goad was dispatched. When he arrived, he found a black 2010 Dodge Charger with the front end in a ditch on the west side of SR 45 and the rear end in the southbound lane of the highway. The Charger was in reverse with tires spinning as the driver tried to get out of the ditch. Deputy Goad said the rear tires appeared to have been worn down from the spinning. He knocked on the window and told the driver to exit.

Colt McDaniel was the driver who said he wasn’t injured and didn’t need an accident report. He was checked by EMS and said he didn’t want medical treatment.

Deputy Zachary Goad reported he could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from McDaniels and he also saw a green plant material in plain view in the vehicle.

McDaniel failed field sobriety tests on the scene and was transported to the sheriff’s department where he again failed sobriety testing. The results of a chemical breath test showed he had an alcohol concentration equivalent to .175. The legal limit is .08.

The green plant material was seized as evidence during an inventory of the vehicle – it field-tested positive as marijuana. McDaniel allegedly said he had been drinking Busch Lite at Lonely Nights and admitted the marijuana belonged to him.

McDaniel was booked into the Greene County Jail at 7:13 a.m. with bond set at $4,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $400 and was released later the same day.

He is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court on September 9 for his initial hearing on charges of:

• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor,

• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor,

• Operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more, a Class A misdemeanor, and

• Possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor.
