When a driver found himself trapped inside his car after falling asleep and ending up in a ditch near Switz City, deputies suspected impaired driving.

Ryan Boaz Faulkner, 28, of Pittsboro, Ind., was arrested by Deputy Zachary Goad of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department early Sunday, March 29, following a crash south of Switz City.

Around 4:11 a.m. that Sunday, deputies were dispatched when the sheriff’s department got a report of a vehicle off the road in a ditch on State Road 67 just south of Switz City.

Deputy Zachary Goad, the investigating officer, said GCSD Sgt. Bobby Pierce arrived first and found Faulkner inside a maroon Ford Taurus. Faulkner was not able to get out of the car because the ditch was blocking the doors. Faulkner asked Sgt. Pierce to break a window so he could get out, but eventually Faulkner was able to get out by squeezing out of the driver’s side door.

Faulkner said he possibly fell asleep while driving. Deputy Goad said the vehicle was southbound on the highway, crossed into the oncoming lane and went off the side of the roadway, landing in a ditch on the east side of the highway.

Faulkner allegedly exhibited signs of impaired driving and had open sores on his face and track marks on his arms near veins. Faulkner passed one part of field sobriety testing but failed others. Green plant-like material believed to be marijuana was located in the car and a search warrant was obtained to obtain a blood sample. Test results are pending.

Faulkner was booked into the Greene County Jail around 7:45 a.m. Sunday. His bond was set at $4,500 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $450 and was released later the same day.

With test results still pending, Faulkner is currently facing charges of:

• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor,

• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor, and

• Possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor.

Faulkner is currently scheduled to appear in court for an initial hearing on April 30.
