Driver found unresponsive in crashed vehicle was arrested on drug charges

A man believed to have overdosed on a narcotic drug, found unresponsive in a motel room in early July, was arrested last Friday after he was again found unresponsive, this time in the driver’s seat of a crashed vehicle, with his foot on the gas and a syringe and burnt spoon nearby.

Nathan Wayne Davidson

Nathan Wayne Davidson, 26, Dugger, was arrested by Deputy Alan Jackson of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department on Friday, September 18.

Last Friday at 3:31 p.m., someone called dispatch at the sheriff’s department to report a crash in the area of County Road 230 North and CR 1500 West. The caller said the driver was a man who was unresponsive but breathing who still had his foot pressing on the gas pedal but the vehicle was stopped by an embankment.

Deputy Jackson responded and found Nathan Davidson in the driver’s seat of a black 2016 Chevrolet Malibu that was off the road, crashed into an embankment.

Davidson was not responding to questions and Deputy Jackson said he could see a syringe on the floorboard on the passenger side and a silver metal spoon, with a white residue in it and black burn marks on the bottom, under Davidson’s right elbow.

Linton Rescue also responded and rescue personnel administered Narcan to Davidson who then became more responsive. Rescue personnel next informed the deputy that Davidson was trying to hide a small bag. The deputy then found Davidson holding a small blue plastic ziplock bag containing a powder substance.

The deputy reported Davidson showed numerous signs of impairment including signs that led to a belief that he had overdosed on a controlled substance, possibly heroin or an opiate.

Due to Davidson’s condition, no field sobriety tests were attempted and when a Greene County Ambulance arrived on the scene, Davidson was transported to Greene County General Hospital where Davidson did agree to take a chemical test. A blood draw was taken – results pending.

After treatment at the hospital, Davidson was transported to the Greene County Jail where he was booked in at 7:08 p.m.

During an interview at the jail, Davidson allegedly admitted to using heroin just before driving and crashing the vehicle.

Deputy Jackson reported the substance in the blue bag field-tested positive for methamphetamine, fentanyl and oxycodone. It was being sent to the Indiana State Police lab for testing.

Davidson was one of two men found unconscious in a motel room in Linton in early July. Officers believed they had both overdosed and they were transported to the hospital by ambulance. Though they were not arrested at that time, charges were filed and warrants were issued for their arrest. Davidson was arrested on September 4 and charged with felony possession of methamphetamine, possession of a narcotic drug and possession of a syringe. He had since posted bond and was released from jail.

As a result of the latest incident involving the crash, Davidson appeared in Greene Superior Court yesterday, Thursday, September 24, and was charged with:

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,

  • Unlawful possession of syringe, a Leve 6 felony,

  • Possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor,

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor,

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor, and

  • Operating a vehicle with a controlled substance in the body, a Class C misdemeanor.

His bond in the new case was set at $20,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. As of early Friday afternoon, he had not yet posted bond and remained in jail.
