Late Monday night, a driver found slumped over behind the wheel of a running truck was arrested.  

Kyle Patrick Steadman, 25, Lyons, was arrested by Officer Kyle Robison of the Linton Police Department early yesterday, Tuesday, July 21, following an incident that occurred late Monday, July 20.

Around 11:22 p.m. Monday, Officer Robison found a man slumped over in the driver’s seat of a white 2009 GMC truck that was sitting in the parking lot of a fitness gym on A Street NW in Linton. The truck was running, a back door window was partially rolled down and loud music was playing.

Officer Robison knocked on the driver’s door but the man didn’t move. When LPD Officer Adam King arrived to assist, he activated his patrol vehicle’s air horn but the man still didn’t move. Officer Robison then opened the driver’s door and shook the man’s arm to wake him.

The driver was later identified as Kyle Steadman. When he was asked to turn the vehicle off, he allegedly kept reaching for the gear shifter. Officer King reached in and shut the vehicle off and removed the keys. Steadman was asked to exit the vehicle but he refused and resisted the officer’s attempts to remove him. After several warnings, Steadman was tased then taken into custody. He was checked out by emergency medical technicians before he was transported.

Officer Robison reported when he walked up to the vehicle’s open window and when he talked to Steadman, he could smell the odor of alcohol and Steadman exhibited signs of impairment. A partially consumed bottle of Crown Royal whiskey was located inside the vehicle.

Steadman allegedly failed field sobriety testing at the police department, and results from a certified chemical test showed he had a BAC of .17. The legal limit is .08.

Steadman was booked in to jail at 12:39 a.m. on Tuesday. His bond was set at $5,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $500 and was released later that day.

Steadman is facing preliminary charges of:

• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor,

• Operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more, a Class A misdemeanor, and

• Resisting law enforcement – knowingly or intentionally forcibly resists, a Class A misdemeanor.
