A driver from elsewhere was just cruising around the area after attending the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza last weekend when he was stopped near Bloomfield for almost running off the road. He ended up in jail for OVWI.

Franklin Dean Sanders, 21, North Vernon, Ind., was arrested by Sgt. Jordan Allor of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department early last Saturday, August 28, after Sanders was stopped by GCSD Maj. George Dallaire in the Bloomfield area.

Sanders was the driver of a white 2013 Dodge Ram 3500 traveling on West State Road 54 near the Veterans Bridge west of Bloomfield around 2 a.m. last Saturday. He was pulled over by Maj. Dallaire who observed the vehicle travel right of the fog line twice and almost run off the road.

Lt. Marvin Holt of the Bloomfield Police Department responded to assist on the scene along with GCSD Sgt. Allor, the investigating officer.

Sanders exhibited signs of intoxication and officers noticed alcoholic beverage containers in plain view during the stop. He failed field sobriety testing on the scene, tested above the legal limit on a portable breath test and was transported to the sheriff’s department where he passed some and failed some field sobriety tests.

He agreed to take a chemical test and results showed he had an alcohol concentration of .099. The legal limit is .08.

Sanders said he wasn’t from the area and didn’t know what highway he was on but he had been to the Scheid Diesel Extravaganza where he had a hot dog and fries around 8 p.m. He said he’d been cruising around for about three hours and he allegedly admitted he’d been drinking earlier.

Sanders was booked into the Greene County Jail at 3:29 a.m. with bond set at $4,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $400 and was released later the same day.

Sanders is facing charges of:

• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor,

• Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor, and

• Operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to at least .08 but less than .15, a Class C misdemeanor.

He is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court for his initial hearing on September 16.
