Driver arrested for drugs by WPD

When an officer checked on a man who had stopped to work on his car in the parking area of a gas station in Worthington last week, the man ended up in the county jail because he didn't have a valid driver’s license plus he allegedly had a dope pipe in one pocket, marijuana in another pocket and methamphetamine in another pocket.

William Raymond Murphy Jr

William Raymond Murphy, Jr., 28, Linton, was arrested by Deputy Marshall Ryan Montgomery of the Worthington Police Department on Wednesday, June 1.

Around 5:15 that afternoon, a man later identified as William Raymond Murphy, Jr. was working on his blue Ford Focus that was parked near the diesel pumps at the Worthington Food Mart located on South Commercial Street/State Road 67 in Worthington when Officer Montgomery noticed him and walked over to his vehicle.

Officer Montgomery also noticed that while they were talking, Murphy seemed nervous and would not make eye contact. When asked for his identification, Murphy provided a state identification card and said he was not sure if his driver’s license was valid because it might have been suspended due to child support obligations. A records check showed Murphy's driver’s license was suspended due to an infraction and his re-eligibility was indefinite. Records also revealed Murphy had previous interactions with law enforcement in cases that involved theft, drugs and an authorized entry into a vehicle. Murphy allegedly admitted he did drive to the location but said he didn't know that his license was suspended.

When asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, Murphy consented to a search. Then during a pat down for possible weapons, Murphy emptied his pockets. Officer Montgomery reported Murphy had a dope pipe in one pocket that Murphy said he found and was going to turn into the Linton Police Department. It was a pink sock containing a glass pipe with white residue. Murphy also said he forgot he had his bag of weed in another pocket as he pulled out a zip bag containing a green plant material. In another pocket, Murphy allegedly had a small plastic bag containing a white crystal substance inside an aspirin bottle. This substance later tested positive as methamphetamine.

Murphy was taken into custody and booked into the Greene County Jail at 7:01 PM. He was initially held without bond pending court appearance which was scheduled earlier today, June 7.

Murphy has been charged with:

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,

  • Possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor, and

  • Possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
