Driver accused of leaving the scene after incident with another vehicle
A summons to appear in court after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident has been issued for a Bloomington man following an incident near East Sylvania Road and East State Road 54 on March 28.
Javon Patterson has received a summons to appear in Greene Superior Court on May 11 on a Class B Misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident, driver fails to immediately stop at the scene.
Greene County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Caleb Sipes and reserve deputy Bobby Just arrived at Eastern Greene High School where Brittany Jackson advised she was westbound on Sylvania Road and approached a hill. She told officers a red sedan was on her side of the road, causing her to swerve off the road into the grass. She said she turned around because she thought the driver of the sedan was going to stop but she did not locate the vehicle. She noted she had a piece of a mirror that belonged to the vehicle driven by Patterson.
The officers traveled westbound on Sylvania Road in an attempt to locate the crash location. Upon arriving in the area of 10599 East Sylvania Road in the westbound lane, Deputy Sipes observed skid marks in the grass and pieces of debris from both vehicles involved.
While officers were interviewing Jackson, dispatch received a call from Patterson stating he was currently in Bloomington but had been involved in an accident. Deputy Sipes contacted Patterson via his department-issued cell phone.
Patterson advised he was traveling approximately 40 miles per hour and alleged Jackon was “going way faster than that”. Patterson alleged Jackson hit the front of his vehicle and struck his mirror. Patterson stated he looked in his rearview mirror and did not see Jackson’s vehicle anymore. When asked if he stopped after the accident, Patterson alleged he stopped but the other vehicle kept going. He said he didn’t want to “chase them” because he didn’t know what the other driver was “capable of doing”.
Patterson told Deputy Sipes he was going around the corner and struck the front of his vehicle and his mirror. He alleged when his mirror came off, he stopped and observed Jackson’s vehicle continuing on Sylvania Road.
Patterson told Deputy Sipes he waited to contact law enforcement until he reached his destination.
Patterson will appear in court on May 11.
