Drag racer killed in crash on the track during race at Wagler Raceway in Lyons
A crash late last night on the track during a race at Wagler Raceway in Lyons claimed the life of driver William D. Young.
Limited information on the crash, which has been under investigation by the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, was released on Sunday afternoon.
GCSD Detective Shawn Cullison, the lead investigating officer, reported the crash occurred at 9:44 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, during a race.
Young, age 54, was operating a custom-built drag car on the raceway and was making a pass when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a wall which caused the car to overturn.
Young’s injuries were fatal and the investigation is ongoing.
In addition to the sheriff’s department, personnel also responded to the scene from the Greene County Ambulance Service, the Lyons Fire Department and the Switz City Fire Department.
