Details about attempted murder still sketchy with investigation ongoing

The 911 call came in to dispatch at the Linton Police Department a little after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28, from someone who said their neighbor had come running in yelling for help saying her boyfriend had just stabbed her multiple times.

Derrick Harper. Mug shot from previous arrest on November 4.

Linton police officers responded along with the Greene County Ambulance Service and the victim, Lisa Cross of Linton, was transported to Greene County General Hospital, then transferred to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Linton Police Chief Troy Jerrell said he did not have information about the weapon in front of him, but Cross sustained nine stab wounds and was believed to be in a stable non-life-threatening condition.

The suspect, Derrick Harper, 33, Linton, who lived with Cross, was arrested.

The stabbing incident occurred at a residence on F Street NE between 1st and 2nd streets.

Chief Jerrell said both LPD Det. Paul Clark and Sgt. Logan Hobbs were working the investigation, with assistance from other LPD personnel.

Few details about the incident have been released as the ongoing investigation prepares evidence and information to hand over to the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office.

Criminal charges are expected to be filed against Harper but it’s not known whether that will happen today/Thursday, Friday, or possibly next week.

Harper was booked in to the Greene County Jail at 12:53 a.m. today, Thursday, November 29, by Det. Clark but he was taken into custody earlier in the night, on Wednesday, November 28.

Harper was booked in on preliminary charges of:

  • Attempted murder, a Level 1 felony,

  • Battery by means of a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony,

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Public intoxication, a Class B misdemeanor.

He’s currently being held without bond.

When this case is filed, Harper will then have three criminal cases pending against him, all involving threatening and intimidating behavior.

Harper had been arrested on November 4 then appeared in court for initial hearings in both of the previous cases. His bond had been set at $10,500 surety and when the defense filed a motion on November 16 to reduce the amount of his bond, a judge denied the request.

Then last Friday, November 23, a ten percent cash bond of $1,050 was posted and Harper was released from the Greene County Jail. Less than a week later, he’s accused of attempted murder and he’s back in jail.
