Close call with a police vehicle leads to arrest

A driver is facing OVWI charges after they narrowly missed hitting a police officer’s vehicle then tested with a BAC of .156.

Kaylie Castro

Kaylie Castro, 30, Linton, was arrested by Officer Alan Jackson of the Linton Police Department. She was booked into the Greene County Jail at 1:47 a.m. on Monday, May 31, following a traffic stop that was initiated at 11:54 p.m. on Sunday, May 30.

Officer Jackson was on patrol in a marked patrol vehicle in an area of 5th Street NW, northbound, near C Street NW, when he noticed an oncoming vehicle approaching with headlights on bright.

He said as the southbound vehicle got closer, it started to veer into his lane of travel. Officer Jackson said he moved as far right as he could. A collision was narrowly avoided when the other vehicle swerved back into its lane, then continued on.

The other vehicle, a silver 2013 Kia S4, made one turn then another, without using a turn signal. A traffic stop was conducted at State Road 54 and 3rd Street NW.

The driver was identified as Kaylie Castro who allegedly said she was sorry but was messing with her cell phone when she almost hit the officer’s vehicle.

Officer Jackson reported Castro showed signs of intoxication and admitted she’d had a couple of beers. Castro allegedly failed field sobriety testing and a chemical breath test revealed she had a BAC of .156. The legal limit is .08. She was arrested and transported to jail.

Castro’s bond was set at $4,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She posted $400 and was released later the same day.

She is scheduled to appear in court for her initial hearing on June 14 on charges of:

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor,

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor, and

  • Operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more, a Class A misdemeanor.
