Ronald Ian Leach, 35, Brazil, was arrested by Deputy Harvey Holt of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department early Thursday, September 17.

On that Thursday, Leach was the driver of a black 2016 Dodge Ram that was crashed on County Road 200 North, west of State Road 67, north of Switz City.

Deputy Holt, the investigating officer, was dispatched at 7:41 a.m. along with Deputy James Carpenter to the scene of an accident involving one vehicle where Leach was reported to be injured and standing next to his wrecked truck that was out in a field.

When they arrived, Leach was found with a minor injury to his face. Leach allegedly showed many signs of impairment and Deputy Holt reported Leach could not walk out of the field without assistance being held up and that he was swaying and staggering while trying to walk.

When Deputy Carpenter asked Leach for his name, Leach allegedly just repeated the deputy’s questions back to him. Then he refused to give the information to Deputy Holt. When told he was being arrested for refusal to identify himself, Leach then provided his name and birthdate.

Field sobriety tests were not conducted due to Leach’s injury and his argumentative attitude. A blood test was taken – results pending.

Leach was booked into the Greene County Jail at 11:33 a.m. During the booking process, Leach was found to be in possession of a controlled substance and did not show that he had a valid prescription for the medication.

Leach’s bond was set at $5,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $500 and was released later the same day.

An initial hearing was scheduled but Leach retained an attorney from Terre Haute and the defense filed a waiver of the initial hearing.

Leach has been charged with:

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor,

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor, and

  • Refusal to identify self, a Class C misdemeanor.
