Bond set at $165,000 for rural Bloomfield man accused of child molestation

A rural Bloomfield man, accused of multiple incidents of child molestation, was arrested by GCSD Det. Elmore last Friday night.

Shane Allen Gilbert, 32, Bloomfield, was arrested by Detective David Elmore of the Greene County Sheriff's Department last Friday, April 8.

Around 8:30 last Thursday night, Det. Elmore was contacted by Deputy Logan Milligan about accusations of child molestation that had occurred at a location on North Lawrence Hollow Drive, rural Bloomfield.

Back in 2017, an assessment was done looking into possible inappropriate sexual behavior by Gilbert but no charges were filed. Then last Thursday, a victim told a different story and admitted they had lied during the earlier assessment in order to protect Gilbert from getting into trouble.

Deputy Milligan advised Det. Elmore that a caseworker from the Greene County Department of Child Services (DCS) had received an after-hours report that a victim had been being sexually abused by Gilbert.

Before 9:00 PM last Thursday, Det. Elmore, the DCS caseworker and the victim were at Susie's Place in Bloomington for a forensic interview. Det. Elmore explained that Susie's Place is a location that specializes in conducting forensic interviews with children.

During the interview, the victim was forthcoming and able to explain with details about several incidents of child molestation that had taken place over a period of about three years.

The next day, Det. Elmore interviewed the victim's mother then interviewed Gilbert.

During Gilbert's interview, he denied some of the accusations but he allegedly admitted to some of the accusations.

According to Det. Elmore, Gilbert apologized for his actions and said he didn't mean for it to happen but he did say it had happened multiple times. No other details will be included in this story.

After his interview, Gilbert was taken into custody and booked into the Greene County Jail around 6:15 PM.

Earlier today, Wednesday, April 13, a criminal case was filed against Gilbert. He is facing charges of:

  • Two counts of child molesting, both are Level 1 felonies, and

  • Three counts of child molesting involving fondling or touching with a child under the age of 14, all Level 4 felonies.

Gilbert is expected to appear before Judge Eric Allen in Greene Circuit Court at 9:30 tomorrow morning, April 14, for his initial hearing.

Gilbert is currently being held in the Greene County Jail with bond set at $165,000 surety with 10% cash allowed.
