A Bloomfield woman is accused of neglect of a dependent because her child has already missed over 19 days of school in the current academic year. She’s been arrested, bonded out of jail and is now facing a felony charge.

Diana Jean Schroyer, also known as Diana Jean Neeley, 47, Bloomfield, was arrested by Investigator Julie Criger from the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office yesterday, Thursday, September 3.

Schroyer was taken into custody on a warrant issued on Wednesday following an investigation by Criger into educational neglect and failure to comply with the compulsory school attendance law.

Schroyer has previously been under investigation for these same issues at least twice, once in 2018 and another last March.

During the March investigation, Schroyer’s child, a student at Eastern Greene Middle School, had missed 36 days of school but was still passing classes. This was prior to school closures due to the pandemic. Schroyer was warned of the criminal consequences if the child continued to miss school.

The current academic year began at Eastern Greene Middle School on August 5. On August 17, Criger was advised that the child had not shown up for school so she went to Schroyer’s residence on East Indiana Avenue in Bloomfield to talk to Schroyer. At that point, the child had nine unexcused absences from school and Schroyer allegedly said she thought school started on August 11. Criger advised Schroyer that the child needed to be in school in Bloomfield, Eastern or somewhere and Schroyer allegedly said she would take care of it.

When Criger checked with a counselor at Eastern Greene on August 24, she learned the child had not yet enrolled and no other school had requested records. Criger returned to Schroyer’s residence but there was no answer to the knock. She left her card asking Schroyer to call but as of August 31, Schroyer had not gotten in contact with Criger.

Criger reported as of August 31, the child had 19 days of unexcused absences and had not enrolled at Eastern Greene or at any other school.

A criminal case was filed against Schroyer and a warrant issued for her arrest. When she was booked in, her bond was set at $4,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She posted $400 and was released later the same day.

Schroyer is facing a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent, a Level 6 felony. She is scheduled to be in court for an initial hearing on September 21.
