A Bloomfield woman reported to have been banned for life from the VFW in Worthington was arrested after she went in to the club and ordered a drink late last Saturday night.

Julie Kay Schaffer, 54, Bloomfield, was arrested by Deputy Marshal James T. Harrington of the Worthington Police Department after he responded to the Worthington VFW late Saturday night about a woman who was asked to leave but refused.

When Officer Harrington arrived at 11:29 p.m., Schaffer was sitting at the bar and he told her she needed to leave. She allegedly said she wasn’t leaving until she got her drink. Harrington escorted her outside to the parking area where she was handcuffed and informed she was being arrested for trespassing.

Harrington reported Schaffer showed signs of alcohol intoxication and a portable breath test showed she had a breath alcohol content of .142.

The officer said when he talked to the manager of the VFW, the manager said Schaffer is aware that she’s been banned from the VFW for the last ten years and that it’s a lifetime ban. He told the officer he didn’t recognize her when she came in, sat at the bar and ordered a drink, but when he did recognize her, he told her she could finish her drink but then should leave. She refused and he told her three more times before telling her he was calling police.

Harrington said on the way to the jail, Schaffer claimed the manager had pushed her into a wall as she came out of the women’s restroom, had grabbed her arm and tried to force her out of the building, and she wanted him charged with battery.

But after Harrington returned to Worthington, around 2 a.m. he interviewed a witness who had been at the VFW and said he saw Schaffer harass at least two people, heard the manager tell Schaffer to leave four times, and heard the manager tell her he was going to call police. He also said he did not see the manager touch Schaffer.

Schaffer’s bond was set at $1,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She has since posted $100 cash to bond out. She is scheduled to appear in court next Monday for her initial hearing on a preliminary charge of criminal trespassing, a Class A misdemeanor.
