Bloomfield Police Department offers tips for safe holiday deliveries

The Bloomfield Police Department has offered some safety tips for those who are utilizing online shopping this holiday season. 

Below are some tips for keeping your home safe if you’re expecting deliveries this holiday season.

Do's:

  • Install security cameras or a wildlife camera placed inside your residence monitoring the usual drop off location. Visible cameras on your porch are the most effective deterrent against porch thieves as they can capture footage of potential suspects. 

  • Use package lockers. Invest in a secure package delivery box that requires a code or key to access, allowing you to receive packages even when you're not home. 

  • Require a signature. When ordering online, select the "signature required" option to ensure someone needs to be present to receive the package. 

  • Get a home security system. Consider a system with motion sensors and alerts that notify you of activity on your porch.

  • Post warning signs. Clearly display signs indicating that your property is under video surveillance

  • Track deliveries. Monitor package tracking information to know when deliveries are expected and be ready to retrieve them promptly 

  • Report suspicious activity. If you see someone acting suspiciously around your porch or a vehicle that is not normally in your neighborhood try and get a description and a plate number if possible and contact the police immediately.

Don'ts:

  • Leave packages unattended. Avoid leaving packages on your porch for extended periods, especially if they contain valuable items 

  • Ignore delivery notifications. Be aware of when deliveries are expected and don't delay in retrieving packages 

  • Leave valuables in plain sight. If possible, conceal valuable items within a package before delivery 

  • Avoid monitoring your cameras. Regularly check your security camera footage to identify potential issues

  • Assume your neighborhood is safe. Even in seemingly safe areas, porch theft can occur 

  • Delay reporting theft. If a package is stolen, report it to the shipping carrier and local authorities as soon as possible.
