Bloomfield man jailed on drug charges

Bloomfield police were investigating an attempted entry into a business followed by a break-in at a residence which led to the arrest of Bloomfield man on drug charges.

Ryan Botkin

Ryan Wayne Botkin, 39, Bloomfield, was arrested late Monday, September 30, by Sgt. Bobby Pierce of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department following an investigation that started with the Bloomfield Police Department.

Lt. Marvin Holt and Deputy Marshal Wayman JR Blazier, both from the Bloomfield Police Department, responded that night to Lynnie’s Pizza restaurant in Bloomfield because of a report that Botkin had been there, acting in an unruly manner, then left the restaurant, then attempted to break in through the back door.

While they were investigating that incident, they were notified of a residential entry on Spring Street where a homeowner said that when he got home, the back door was standing wide open and medication was missing.

Botkin was located in the area and when he was questioned, he gave vague answers but agreed to empty his pockets. Botkin said he had been staying at a residence on Nancy Avenue and when asked if there were any stolen items there, Botkin said no and agreed to a search of the residence if the owner agreed.

That’s when Sgt. Pierce got involved. He and GCSD Deputy Alan Jackson went to the residence and spoke to the owner. She agreed the officers could look for stolen medication. But while walking through the house, Sgt. Pierce said he smelled the odor of marijuana and the resident then agreed to a warrantless search of the residence.

Sgt. Pierce reported the deputies found various items of paraphernalia, prescription pills, and items with white residue. One item that was field tested showed the presence of methamphetamine.

The resident was taken into custody and booked into jail and was released on bond. (Note: As of Friday, could not find that any charges have been filed yet against the resident.)

Botkin was booked in to the Greene County Jail where he was held without bond pending his appearance in court.

When he appeared in Greene Superior Court yesterday, Thursday, October 3, he was charged with:

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,

  • Two counts of possession of a controlled substance, both Class A misdemeanors, and

  • Possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

A public defender was appointed to represent Botkin and his bond was then set at $25,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. As of Friday, October 4, he had not yet posted bond.
