Bloomfield man facing battery charges

A Bloomfield man is accused of domestic battery to a girlfriend in the presence of children and battery to a neighbor man who came to the door and asked if the girlfriend was all right.

Matthew Walter Witkowski

Matthew Walter Witkowski, 34, Bloomfield, was arrested early Tuesday, October 22, by Deputy Davis Aerne of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department after a domestic incident that started late Monday, October 21.

Deputy Aerne, the investigating officer, responded to a home on North Sharkey Road after a woman called the sheriff’s department around 11:54 p.m. and said her neighbor’s boyfriend, later identified as Witkowski, was intoxicated and angry and her neighbor had asked her to call the police.

GCSD Deputy Alan Jackson also responded and assisted in interviewing individuals on the scene.

Witkowski and his girlfriend had been in a physical altercation. When interviewed, she allegedly said he threw nail polish all over her, threw her on the floor, took her cell phone, then shoved her as she was trying to go to the neighbor’s house. He allegedly said he dumped the nail polish, she started “socking” him as he held her down, and admitted he took her cell phone and threw it towards the woods.

When the deputies arrived, they learned the caller’s brother saw the woman’s door was open so he walked over to the door and asked the woman if she was all right. When the neighbor man appeared at the door, the two men had words and Witkowski allegedly threw the first punch before the two ended up wrestling on the floor before others pulled them apart.

When deputies arrived, Witkowsky was loading personal items into his vehicle to leave.

Deputy Aerne reported that after talking to Witkowsky, the woman, and the neighbor man, Witkowsky was arrested and transported to the Greene County Jail where he was booked in around 1:30 a.m. Witkowsky posted bond and was released later the same day.

According to the affidavit prepared by Deputy Aerne, there were two children present in the home who witnessed the altercations.

Witkowsky is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court next Monday, October 31, for an initial hearing when he will be formally charged with:

  • Domestic battery committed in the presence of a child less than 16 years of age, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Battery, a Class B misdemeanor.
