Bloomfield man arrested for meth during ongoing investigation into beating incident

Officers are still looking for the suspect accused of brutally beating a man with a club last Wednesday night but during the course of their investigation, they interviewed another man and arrested him for possession of methamphetamine.

Eric Lee Carmichael

Eric Lee Carmichael, 47, Bloomfield, was arrested by Indiana State Police Trooper Richard Klun last Thursday afternoon, March 25.

As of late this afternoon, Monday, March 29, the warrant for the arrest of Scott Douglas Stahl, 43, Bloomfield, is still outstanding but officers have been trying to locate Stahl since he became a suspect in last week’s incident in which Stahl is believed to have beaten a man with a club.

So last Thursday, March 25, Indiana State Police Troopers Richard Klun and Ben Burris were assisting detectives and deputies of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation and were trying to locate Stahl.

According to Trooper Klun, they were advised that Stahl could possibly be staying with Eric Carmichael at Carmichael’s residence on State Road 54 east of Bloomfield and the troopers went there to check.

Of note: Some witnesses to the attack by Stahl said they thought the truck Stahl was driving on the day of the attack was owned by Carmichael.

When the troopers arrived, they were met at the door by a man who said Stahl was not there and was not welcome there. They asked to walk through the house to make sure Stahl was not hiding inside and the resident gave his consent for the walk-through.

Eric Carmichael was not at the residence at this time, but during the walk-through, the troopers looked into his bedroom and Trooper Klun reported that he saw two glass smoking devices sitting in an ash tray on a night stand next to the bed. According to Trooper Klun, the devices both had a white powder in them with burnt residue on the end.

Trooper Klun requested a search warrant which was granted out of Greene Superior Court at 1:42 p.m. then executed by the two troopers.

Trooper Klun reported that inside Carmichael’s bedroom, they found the two smoking devices and one of them tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine. They also found multiple empty plastic baggies with residue, two of which had more residue than the others, two plastic tube straws with residue and a plastic container with a crystal substance.

Carmichael was not at the residence at the time of the search because he was at the sheriff’s department where detectives were interviewing him in connection with Stahl and the attack incident. When the interview was completed, Carmichael was taken into custody.

Carmichael was booked into the Greene County Jail before 3 p.m. He was initially held without bond pending court appearance.

Earlier today, on Monday morning, Carmichael appeared in Greene Superior Court for his initial hearing via a two-way video connection between the jail and the courtroom. During the hearing, a public defender was appointed to represent Carmichael and his bond was set at $4,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed.

Carmichael has been charged with:

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

As of late Monday afternoon, Carmichael had not yet posted bond.
