Bloomfield man accused of beating, strangling woman then pointing a gun at her head
A 33-year-old Bloomfield man was arrested in the morning hours of Jan. 21 on various charges after allegedly strangling, battering, and pointing a firearm at his wife.
Evan Wayne Lewellyn was arrested by Deputy Kelly Hutchens of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department. Hutchens was dispatched to a domestic battery on County Road 700 South in Lyons.
Upon arrival at the scene at approximately 5:07 a.m., Hutchens noticed an older orange-colored Chevrolet pickup truck sitting perpendicular to the roadway with its front end in the ditch. Hutchens wrote in the probable cause affidavit that no one was located in or around the vehicle; however, there were vehicle tracks coming from the field west of the truck, leading to its resting spot. Hutchens wrote it was apparent the truck was stuck and someone had tried to get it out of the ditch as there were ruts dug into the gravel road. The residence west of where the truck was located was Lewellyn’s residence.
As Hutchens approached the residence from which the call to dispatch was placed, the homeowner was outside with a flashlight, directing the officer to the residence. Once inside the residence, Deputy Hutchens came in contact with the victim, who had blood around her mouth and redness on her face and neck. Hutchens wrote that the victim’s upper lip also appeared to be swollen. A call for an ambulance was offered but turned down by the victim.
The victim said she and Lewellyn had been drinking earlier in the evening and had gotten into an argument. She said they were lying in bed and she told him they would talk about it the next day.
The victim said Lewellytn then held her down on the bed and punched her in the face. When asked by Deputy Hutchens how he punched her, she said he slapped her once and closed fist punched her in the mouth. She told the deputy she felt like the caps on her front teeth had been loosened and rated her pain as a seven on a scale of one to 10.
She said she had her phone and was attempting to call 911 but Lewellyn knocked it out of her hands. She said she then left the residence and got into the Chevrolet – the vehicle Deputy Hutchens found stuck in the ditch upon arrival. She alleged Lewellyn pulled her out of the truck while it was still in drive and the truck continued through the yard. She said she attempted to stop the truck and lost her shoes along the way. She said she was trying to get the truck out of the ditch when she heard Lewellyn start his truck. At that time, she told the officer, she ran to the neighbor’s house.
She allegedly told Deputy Hutchens this was not the first instance of domestic violence between her and Lewellyn, she had never reported it before.
Deputy Stanley of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department began looking for Lewellyn while the victim showed Hutchens the residence in which the incident occured.
Once inside the residence, the victim said Lewellyn pointed a gun in her mouth, later stating she did not know why she said that. She did allege he pointed the gun to her head, above and a little behind her left ear. She told Hutchens she was unsure where he got the gun from, either on or from the gun safe.
Red droplets of what appeared to be blood were located on the floor when walking toward as well as into the bedroom. The unmade bed had a towel lying on it with red stains that appeared to be blood. The victim said she had used a towel to remove blood from herself. According to the probable cause, damage to a closet door and in the bathroom was noted. The victim noted The damage took place that night.
Deputy Stanley located Lewellyn and transported him to Greene County Jail for interview. He told officers they had been out drinking and had gone home to go to bed. When asked about the events that took place in the bedroom, Lewellyn, according to the probable cause affidavit, said it would be best if he quit talking.
Lewellyn was advised that he was going to be arrested but he questioned what was going to happen to the victim. He said she had bitten his leg and drawn blood. He indicated a bite mark on his right leg. He offered to show officers and officers took pictures of the mark which appeared to be recent with redness and inflammation.
The victim’s family decided to take her to the hospital to get checked out, so after talking with Lewellyn, Deputy Hutchens again spoke with the victim. She had the victim go back over the events that had taken place.
She again told Deputy Hutchens Lewellyn was on top of her with his hand on her throat, making it hard for her to breathe. She said he hit her with his other hand while holding her down by the neck. Hutchens observed redness on the victim’s neck. She said he then grabbed her phone and knocked it out of her hands. She said she was able to get him off of her and went and she went to get her phone from the floor. She said she believed this is when he got the gun, which she described as possibly .38 caliber either black or dark gray in color. She said he then knocked her back onto the bed and placed the gun to her head. She said he held the gun just above and a little behind her left ear. She said she feared for her life. She said she was able to kick and push him off of her. She said she grabbed her phone and went to the truck to get away.
Lewellyn was booked into Greene County Jail with bond set at $19,000 surety with 10 percent allowed. He was released later the same day after posting $1,900.
