Bloomfield accused of sending threatening text messages, spraying pepper spray in someone's face

Failure to receive an invitation to a Father’s Day event upset a Bloomfield woman so much that she was arrested on charges of domestic battery and intimidation after spraying her ex-husband in the face with pepper spray and sending threatening text messages to her son.

Bloomfield Police Department Officer Ryan Montgomery arrested 59-year-old Brenda Lea Hancock on Class A Misdemeanor charges on June 18.

Officer Montgomery responded to an East Church Street residence in Bloomfield at approximately 6:53 p.m. in regard to a domestic complaint to find a male subject in the front yard with a red face and red eyes. According to the probable cause affidavit, the individual alleged his ex-wife, later identified as Hancock, had sprayed him in the face with pepper spray. He alleged that while he was inside her residence returning keys to her vehicle, she became upset due to the fact she had not received an invitation to a Father’s Day dinner. He alleged she began hitting him in the face with two shoes, which she was holding in both hands. He further alleged she sprayed him in the face with pepper spray. The individual denied putting his hands on Hancock; however, he admitted taking one of the shoes from her.

The son told officers his father contacted him and asked him to pick him up in Bloomfield. According to the probable cause affidavit, he said his dad was returning Hancock’s vehicle, then walking. As he was driving from Bloomington to Bloomfield to pick up his father, he began receiving threatening messages from Hancock.

The threatening messages were shown to Officer Montgomery with one reading, “I’m coming out you better hope I don’t meet you cause I’ll hit you head on! Kill us all!!!!!” Another message read, “Better hurry and pick him up cause I’m gonna hit him if I see him walking.”

While the ex-husband told officers he did not want to press charges against Hancock, the son told officers he wanted to press charges for the text messages she sent threatening his life.

Officer Montgomery spoke with Hancock at her East Church Street residence where according to the probable cause affidavit, she admitted to hitting her ex-husband in the face with a pair of tennis shoes. She also allegedly admitted to spraying him in the face with pepper spray; however, she said she did that because he acted like he was going to hit her while she was hitting him with the shoes. She admitted she was upset because she didn’t get an invitation to a Father’s Day event. In addition, she admitted to sending threatening text messages.

She was transported to Greene County Jail where her bond was set at $2,000 surety with 10% cash allowed.

She appeared in Greene Superior Court on June 26 for an initial hearing. She is facing charges of domestic battery and intimidation, both Class A Misdemeanors.
