A bicyclist reported to be laying on the side of a road last Saturday night was arrested and charged with public intoxication and possession of marijuana.

William Gillis Arney, 47, Solsberry, was arrested by Deputy William C. Walker of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department last Saturday night, May 29.

At 8:16 p.m. last Saturday, a 911 caller reported a man with a bicycle was laying on the side of the road in the area of East Chapel Road and North Pine Drive.

Deputy Walker responded along with Sgt. Jordan Allor and Deputy Camron Frye.

The deputies found the bicyclist walking down a roadway, allegedly stumbling as he walked.

According to Deputy Walker, Arney said he had walked to Bloomington the night before to get a bicycle wheel for one of his bicycles because his other bicycle was either lost or stolen. Arney was slurring his speech and his breath had the odor of alcohol.

Arney was offered a ride to his residence on East Tulip Road so he didn’t have to walk home, but was advised he would need to be searched before getting into a patrol vehicle. Arney agreed.

During the search, a clear plastic bag containing green plant material that field-tested positive as marijuana was found inside Arney’s cigarette pack. Arney allegedly said the marijuana was given to him for free when he was in Bloomington.

Arney was taken into custody and transported to the Greene County Jail where he was booked in at 10:09 p.m.

Arney has been charged with:

• Possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor,

• Public intoxication that endangers life, a Class B misdemeanor.

His bond was set at $1,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. As of late Wednesday, Arney had not yet posted bond and was still in custody.
