3-pointer in final seconds allows Mitchell to edge Bloomfield in opener

Fans who attended Bloomfield’s season opener at home against Mitchell on Tuesday night witnessed a tournament-like atmosphere in the final minute.

Lola Myers hit a 3-pointer to put the Lady Cardinals up 43-41 with 10 seconds to play. Then Mitchell’s Asiah Saunders sank a 3-pointer of her own to give her team a 44-43 advantage.

Bloomfield was unable to get a shot off at the buzzer for the win, as Mitchell hung on for the high school basketball victory.

“(We didn’t get a) shot off, and I was out of timeouts,” Bloomfield Coach Siera Babcock said.

Saunders led Mitchell with 15 points — all 3-pointers — and she had four in the fourth quarter, including the game winner.

Myers led all scorers with 24 points, including five 3-poiners of her own.

“It was an adjustment, but we played hard for four quarters,” Babcock said. “(I) saw great composure and we played with a lot of heart.”

Bloomfield got a good performance from freshman Ellie Figg as she finished with nine points. Zylah Hendricks added four, Rylynne Potts added three, Dixie Hudson two, and Aaliyah O’Connor one.

The Lady Cardinals (0-1) are back in action Friday at Loogootee. The nonconference game is the season opener for the Lady Lions.
